Premiered at the Swiss Institute in New York in 2012, Olaf Breuning presented his film trilogy to a wider UK audience for the first time at the ICA, London. In his Home Trilogy he touches upon a contemporary nerve by looking at the way the meaning of home has shifted through the inexhaustible landscape of the Internet, whose subject is everything (the whole world) and nothing (the inside of someone’s head). In all three films the protagonist is portrayed as a modern-day Don Quixote with a near-pathological reflex of wanting and failing to establish a harmonious unity with all people and with every corner of the planet. In the films the artist adopts a confessional structure that so often defines participation in the digital age. This is a link as well as a response to the contemporary quest for what it means to establish an identity in the age of information overload, but it is also an entirely personal and original body of work by the artist and his Swiss ‘psyche’.
