Tabea Martin, one of Switzerland’s finest contemporary choreographers, was this year’s Swiss entry at the Currency Festival, an annual festival of experimental European work in dance, performance art and contemporary circus. Field, a piece for three dancers, describes the struggles and pleasures of human relationships in all their comic and tragic facets. The performance commenced with the titles of the top 100 love songs of the western hemisphere, creating a backdrop for the passionate entanglement of the three protagonists, who, despite all their determination and passion, go their separate ways in the end. Upbeat but thoughtful, Martin reflected on the eternal topic of love and the fragility of human bonds, leaving the audience rather more hopeful than hopeless about what might come next.
